Thousands of military personnel are returning home.


  • Learn about the challenges military families experience when a family member returns.
  • Find out what resources are available for military personnel and families.

Speaker: Cindy Risch has over twenty years as a Veteran, and Military Spouse, has three children and transitioned more than 12 times. Cindy’s husband has deployed 4 times and is currently serving in the Army at Fort Hood, TX.  She has been with the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) and the Parent to Parent since 2007.  Cindy has been professionally trained for MCEC as a Parent to Parent Supervisor, as well as a Living in the New Normal-Practicum and Supporting Children of the National Guard and Reserve Institute Trainer.

The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, world-wide organization. A model of positive leadership and advocacy, the MCEC’s work is focused on ensuring quality educational opportunities for all military-connected children affected by mobility, family separation, and transition. The MCEC performs research, conducts professional institutes and conferences, and develops and publishes resources for all constituencies.

The MCEC’s Parent to Parent is a program that empowers parents to be their child’s strongest advocate on educational and social issues through the MCEC’s Parent Workshops. More than 100,000 parents have been trained since the program beginning in 2006.


9:30 - 12:30 Building Resiliency Skills During Deployments and Transitions, part 1.

The challenges that military families face during deployments and transitions offer them unique opportunities to build resiliency skills which will prepare them for future challenges.  Participants will learn about the 7 C’s of Resilience and how to implement strategies with their family and community that will build on these C’s during normal transition and deployment activities.

Building Resiliency Skills During Deployments and Transitions, part 2.

Participants will explore a wide variety of children’s literature that will be used as springboards for discussions and activities relating to building resilience.  These books and activities can be used in individual and group situations to set expectations regarding character and treatment of others who share our children’s classrooms homes and communities.

There will be a 15 minute break in the morning and in the afternoon.
