Opening Banquet featuring Tulsa author Jennifer Latham

Monday, April 23, 2018
6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

Please note that the banquet requires a separate ticket and is not part of the conference registration.

Jennifer LathamJennifer Latham is the author of Dreamland Burning, a young adult novel focused on the events of the Tulsa Race Riots of 1920.  About the book, Kirkus Reviews states: “...a fast-paced historical novel brimming with unsparing detail and unshakable truths about a shameful chapter in American history. For more than 50 years, Tulsa’s schoolchildren didn’t learn about the race riot, and many outside of Tulsa remain unaware today. This masterfully told story fills this void.” and School Library Journal says “Latham’s enthralling, expertly paced plot will keep readers engaged, and the detailed imagery creates a strong sense of place ... [t]he occasional mature language is deftly integrated and realistic ... and the protagonists, who are relatable and well-developed. Mystery fans will enjoy this cleverly plotted, suspenseful work, while the broader social issues will draw a wide audience.”

Jennifer describes herself as follows:

I write because it’s the only job I’ve been able to stick to for more than two years.  Seriously.

I’ve lived lots of different places.  Here’s the list:  New York City; San Francisco; Augusta, GA; Buffalo, NY; Philadelphia, PA; Madrid; Providence, RI; and now…Tulsa, OK.

I’ve had some really weird and really normal jobs.  The weirdest was helping out with autopsies.  The one I’d go back to if I couldn’t write is being a school psychologist.  The one I still do sometimes is teach yoga.

I live with my two daughters, two dogs, a cat, three turtles, three hermit crabs, a bunch of fish, and a husband (mine, of course).

I love watching people.

And I love writing about the people who live inside my head, even when they don’t play nice.

Jennifer Latham will sign copies of her books after the banquet.  Copies will be available for purchase at the conference bookstore.
