Practical Skills for Problematic Behavior from Homeless Patrons

This practical training teaches library staff how to confidently engage with homeless, mentally ill and addicted patrons (to keep libraries calm, safe and inclusive). The training is interactive and based on Ryan Dowd's career working in large homeless shelters. Mr. Dowd's book, The Librarian's Guide to Homelessness was published by the ALA in January 2018. Mr. Dowd has presented this training at annual conferences all over the country, including, Illinois Library Association, Wisconsin Library Association, Ohio Library Council, Pennsylvania Library Association, Northeast Ohio Library Association (as well as individual libraries). Ryan DowdRyan Dowd is the Executive Director of a large homeless shelter outside of Chicago, Illinois.  He regularly travels the country training libraries, police departments, schools and other organizations on how to work compassionately with difficult homeless individuals.  Ryan is the author of the ALA book, The Librarian's Guide to Homelessness.
