Self-Censorship in the Library

This panel discussion, drawing on audience participation, will investigate how fear of possible backlash from patrons or the community might deter us from ordering certain materials or from creating certain displays. Come prepared to share in the ideas and experiences of our colleagues.

Tara Golden

Tara Golden
is a children’s librarian at the Midwest City Branch of the Metropolitan Library System. She has worked in urban and suburban public libraries since 2012 and served an array of people. A member of Seneca Cayuga Nation, she grew up with a passion for nurturing diverse and inclusive communities. She believes strongly in promoting equality and empathy for all people


Kathy McGilberryKathy McGilberry became Assistant Librarian at McAlester Public Library in 2005, and was named Head Librarian in 2016. She supervises a staff of 14, as well as three Choctaw Nation summer workers, a number of volunteers and workers from other government jobs programs. She has led book clubs, crafts groups, the Let’s Talk About It, Oklahoma program, the Socrates Café discussion group and created the library’s first Adult/Family Summer Reading Program. In 2013, she was involved in the system-wide planning and implementation of The Big Read/True Grit. Prior to joining the library, she had a 25-year career in journalism, and owned and operated three weekly newspapers in Southeastern Oklahoma. She has won a number of writing and editing awards from the Oklahoma Press Association, the Texas Press Association and the Oklahoma Historical Society.
