Revitalizing Senior Services

Tuesday, April 24, 2018
1:30 PM – 2:30 PM
Directors Row 5

Seniors are a vital part of the communities that public libraries serve, but reaching these groups presents unique challenges. This session will outline projects initiated at the Moore and Southwest Oklahoma City Public Libraries that have revitalized the relationship between the library and seniors. The presenters will start with a brief history of senior services at their libraries, discussing both what has and has not worked in the past. For example, they will discuss rotating book collections at senior living centers and the recent move to using individual rather than institutional library accounts. They will describe the evolution of outreach to seniors, including technology help visits, healthy cooking classes, estate planning programs, and partnering with senior meal delivery services to get homebound seniors signed up for books-by-mail. Additionally, they will address how to evaluate the success of senior services and the effectiveness of changes. The session will conclude with a list of resources for programming, services, and partnerships.
