Creating an Effective Teen Volunteer Program

Wednesday, April 25, 2018
2:45 PM – 3:45 PM
Promenade A

Libraries rely on teen volunteers to fill a variety of needs just as teens rely on volunteering as a way to gain valuable skills and build their resume. This session will outline how to create a framework for your volunteer program, how to include your branch as an active participant in your volunteer program, and ways to provide teens with the tools they need to succeed outside the library. Additionally, we will discuss how to offer teens rewards in the form of leadership within the library by creating Teen Lead positions or a Teen Advisory Council

Presented by: Ashley Nixon-Amador and Kassy Nicholson
Sponsored by: Supervisors, Managers, and Administrators Roundtable
Designed for: School, Public libraries
Areas of interest: Children's services, Teen services

Ashley Nixon-Amador

Ashley Nixon-Amador is currently the Information Services Manager at the Southwest Oklahoma City Public Library.  She graduated with her MLIS from OU in May 2014 and has worked for Pioneer Library System since 2015.  Ashley also serves as the Library Coordinator at her branch.

Kassy Nicholson

Kassy Nicholson is a huge book nerd and has been pretty much since birth. When she’s not reading, or talking about books, or trying to foist books off on others, she's thinking about how to get teens more involved at the library. She has been known to lose sleep over the teen volunteer schedule.
