Winners of the Essay Contest:

Nirvana Khan - Winner 4th - 8th GradeNirvana Khan – Winner for the 4th-8th grade category.  Nirvana is pictured receiving recognition Senator John Sparks, District 16.  Presenting the recognition is Cindy Moore, Administrative Assistant to Senator Sparks. Miss Khan wrote, “During my childhood, my parents could never afford books.  If not for my local library, I may have never become such a lover of learning.”

Rosalinda Espinosa - Judge's Choice 


Rosalinda Espinosa – Judges’ Choice Award.  Pictured with Tim Rogers, Director of the Metropolitan Library System and Calypso Gilstrap, OLA President.  Ms. Espinosa wrote, “ As I grew older, my love of reading grew but my parents could never afford to buy books.  This was never a problem for me because I knew I had millions of books waiting for me at my home away from home.  I loved my library and the programs it offered.”

Gaby Fernandez and Kathy Hale 


Gaby Fernandez – Honorable Mention winner.  Pictured with Kathy Hale, Director of the Southern Plains Library System.  Miss Fernandez wrote, “The library brought me closer to literature, in a physical but also personal way… I picked out a book that called me from its high shelf, flipped through its worn pages.  Yet those worn pages just showed not how old and abandoned it was, but instead, how loved of a story it really was, and it was the push I needed to give into the world of literature.”

Sarah Sampson with Senator Josh BrecheenSarah Sampson – Winner of 9th-12th grade category.  Sarah is pictured (left to right) with her media specialist Mrs. Miller, [Sarah], Coleman Schools Superintendent James Miller and State Senator Josh Brecheen. Miss Sampson wrote, “Our library may not be the fanciest of libraries.  It doesn’t have two floors full of books or a fancy computer system but it does have something no other library has, Mrs. Miller.  Mrs. Miller has been the librarian for as long as I can remember.  She knows the name of every student and has the perfect recommendations for those who can’t make up their minds about what adventure they would like to go on next.”
