Photo of Kay BoiesIn the September 1983 issue of the Oklahoma Librarian, OLA President Frances Alsworth announced that a wise search committee had just hired a new part-time Executive Secretary for the Oklahoma Library Association.  "To fill the Executive Secretary's position," Alsworth wrote in her President's column, "we have employed Kay Boies. . . . We feel fortunate to have obtained Kay Boies for this position. She has had experience in office management, newspaper reporting, report writing and editing, and has recently been working at ODL co-editing The Source.  We look forward to our association with her."1  It was to be a long and fruitful association.

Kay brought to the position an enthusiasm for libraries that proved to be contagious. Shortly after being hired she was made Executive Director on a full-time basis. During her almost 34 years on the job, Kay served with over 30 different presidents, assisting them with appointments, conference planning, workshop coordination, membership campaigns, fund raising, and all the little details that make a membership association of this type successful.  She retired from OLA on June 30, 2017.

Kay undoubtedly knew more of the approximately 1,000 members than anyone in the state. She worked with hundreds of volunteer contributors and committees, and cheerfully attended thousands of meetings all over Oklahoma. She worked more than “full-time” most weeks in her efforts to assist with workshops, projects, conferences, legislative activities, and in getting to know new members.

Her goal was always to facilitate for its members the mission of OLA, which is “To strengthen the quality of libraries, library services and librarianship in Oklahoma.”

Thousands will agree that she more than accomplished that goal, year after year. Kay always said she loved the opportunity to work with wonderful people, made lasting memories of successful projects and had lots of fun in the process. She remained enthusiastic about libraries and OLA until her death on August 24, 2019 at the age of 78.
