Aarone CorwinThe Library Profession has enriched my life by helping others. My career began as the Children’s Librarian of the Muskogee Public Library and the Children’s Services Coordinator for the Eastern Oklahoma District Library System. Traveling around EODL, and visiting all of the small public libraries was such an eye opener. My goal to improve libraries in Oklahoma became paramount. I established library media centers in the following school systems: Cashion (an elementary and junior/high), Eisenhower Elementary in Norman Public Schools, and Choctaw & Westfall Elementary Schools in the Choctaw / Nicoma Park School District. Teaching library skills and literature appreciation for grades K-6 was a priority. I also served as editor of the “School Library News” column in the Oklahoma Librarian.

As an adjunct Instructor of Library Science, I taught Children’s Literature at both Northeastern State College and the University of Oklahoma. I also served on the School of Library Science Visiting Committee for the University of Oklahoma.

As the Executive Director for the Oklahoma Center for the Book (affiliated with the Library of Congress Center for the Book), the first Oklahoma Book Awards Ceremony was initiated. “National Young Readers’ Day” and “Year of the Young Reader” celebrations in Oklahoma were sponsored by the Center and involved 10,000 children in an internationally broadcast celebration of reading. I served on the Oklahoma State Literacy Commission and was the Co-founder and President of Literacy Link, a community literacy center serving Eastern Oklahoma County.

As a volunteer Chair of the Midwest City Library Advisory Board, I headed the campaign to fund a new regional branch library that now serves residents of Eastern Oklahoma County. Also, I was a member of the Friends of the Metropolitan Library System (MLS) Board of Directors and helped found Friends Of Libraries In Oklahoma. For two years, I chaired the MLS Book Sale.

It was my greatest honor to serve as the President of the Oklahoma Library Association and as Executive Director of OLA. With all of the technology at our fingertips, books still remain a passion for this former library media specialist and always will.
