Shortly after she was employed at TCCL, she began to be active in the various associations related to this work. In the Oklahoma Library Assn., she held many offices including President, Treasurer, ALA Councilor, and chaired most of its committees at some point.  In 2003 she received the Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor OLA bestows upon one of its members. Jan took an active role in legislative activities for many years, often going to ALA’s Legislative Day in Washington, DC, and to Oklahoma City for OLA’s Legislative Day.

For six years, Jan served as a representative of the AMIGOS network to the Advisory Committee of OCLC, the international computer network. She served on its Executive Committee four of those years.

Involvement in the business of the American Library Association began in 1971, and continued for 30 years. She was a member of Council for two four-year terms, was on the ALA Budget Committee for four years, and participated in the development of the current library statistics system, making it mandatory for all states to keep the same statistics with the same definitions. Jan served on a national advisory committee which recommended changes in the system to the National Center for Education Statistics. She chaired and served on several Library Administration and Management Assn. committees and Public Library Assn. committees through the years, often bringing back new ideas to TCCL.
