Photo of June LesterJune Lester served as Director of the University of Oklahoma School of Library and Information Studies from 1993 to 2000. During that time, the School expanded delivery of the Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) program by offering the full range of MLIS courses in Tulsa and delivering required courses to multiple sites in the state via interactive video, making ALA-accredited library and information studies education accessible to a broader segment of Oklahoma citizens than ever before. Also during her tenure as Director, the School’s MLIS program was reaccredited for a full seven-year term. Since 2000, she has continued as a senior member of the School’s faculty.

In addition to her contribution to librarianship in Oklahoma through her dedication to the education of librarians, Lester served on the Oklahoma Library Association Legislative Committee, beginning in 1994 and continuing throughout her career in the state. In 2004-2005 and 2005-2006, she was co-chair of the Committee. In 2005-2006 she helped to lead the successful fight by all Oklahoma librarians against passage of a draconian censorship bill (HB 2158) sponsored by Rep. Sally Kern. In addition, Lester worked with others in the state to protect the requirement for certified, master’s level library educators in the state’s school libraries and helped to defeat the 1998 attempt (HB 3087) to remove the requirement that the Director and Assistant Director of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries and directors of public library systems serving counties with a population of 20,000 have an ALA-accredited degree.
