Eugenia (Frances) Maddox

Frances Eugenia Maddox was born on 28 November 1908 in Columbia, Kansas and died on March 14, 1983 in Tulsa.

A graduate of Tulsa's Central High School in 1926, she attended The University of Tulsa from 1926 to 1927 (English), Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg in 1928-9 (English), and the University of Wisconsin in 1929-1931, graduating with a BA in English. She attended the University of Michigan during the summers of 1935, 1939, and 1940 earning an AMLS.

From 1926-28, she worked for Tulsa Public Library as a Circulation Assistant, and 1931-32 as the 1st assistant cataloger for the Tulsa Public Library. From 1933-1943 she was the head cataloguer at TPL. In 1943 she was hired as the Head Librarian at The University of Tulsa, where she remained until 1967. At that time, she moved to St. Louis to serve as the Head Librarian at the Missouri Botanical Garden until her retirement in 1972 when she returned to Tulsa.

After her retirement she worked briefly for the Tulsa Junior College Library, and organized the American Christian College library. During her career she had been a visiting professor in Library Science at Texas Women’s University in Denton and at the University of Oklahoma’s Library School. She was a member of ALA, BSA, NEA, SLA, OLA (serving as its president in 1953), SWLA, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Kappa Iota, and several local organizations.
