Photo of Marilyn VeselySince 1981 I have been involved with Oklahoma libraries, beginning with reference work and later as the first director of the Office of Public Information at the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. This office published the Oklahoma Almanac and ODL Source. During this time ODL won five John Cotton Dana Awards from the American Library Association for state public relations campaigns like “Libraries for All of Us” and “Libraries, Because They’re Worth It.”

I served as Project Director for the Governor’s Conference on Libraries (1978) and the Oklahoma participation in the White House Conference On Libraries (1979). This included such things as locating and assisting volunteers, presenters and delegates, handling publicity and travel, and developing printed materials.

Other challenges were the planning and organization leading to the establishment of Friends of Libraries in Oklahoma (FOLIO), The Oklahoma Center for the Book and the State Literacy Coalition. Highlights of the latter were the coordination of 90 Literacy Breakfasts held September 14, 1988 and presentation of tutor training workshops in libraries, prisons, vo-tech schools and tribal meeting houses.

I served a two-year term as treasurer of the Oklahoma Library Association and was honored to receive its Lifetime Distinguished Service Award in 1990.

Since my retirement I have kept active in library work, helping local Friends, affixing barcodes on books in Norman’s school libraries, and established a 4,000 book library in the Norman Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center. I tutor adult new readers, and am a dedicated library user.
