OLA 2015: Giving Your Community the Edge

Seventy-six percent of Oklahoma's public libraries are participating in Edge, a national management and leadership tool to help libraries assess their public technology and connect its value to community priorities.  ODL will present statewide findings from the Edge Initiative, and a panel of public libraries will share how they used Edge to make a difference in their communities.

Bill YoungBill Young is Public Information Manager at ODL, supervising the office that hosts the Oklahoma Center for the Book and publishes the biennial Oklahoma Almanac. He has served with Susan McVey on the Edge Round Table since its beginnings, and has contributed to the initiative by working on committees dedicated to training, communications, and benchmark revision.

Elda MooreElda Moore has been director of the Tonkawa Public Library for the past ten years, and previously served as a children’s librarian in that community. She is one of the first 500 individuals to participate in the ODL/OLA Public Librarian Certification Program. Tonkawa’s library has been selected as an example of the impact Edge can have on smaller libraries. A case study detailing the library’s participation in Edge will be featured on

Susan McVeySusan McVey is the director of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries.  She is active in professional library organizations and is past president of the Oklahoma Library Association and the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA).  Susan serves on the national advisory group for the Library Edge initiative which has been engaged from conception to implementation of the project.  Oklahoma is one of three state libraries represented on the Edge Round Table. Oklahoma libraries have been involved as pilot libraries and as one of seven states in the soft launch of the benchmarks and tool kit.

Marcia JohnsonMarcia Johnson has served as director of the Miami Public Library since 2002.  Prior to that she served as school library media specialist for the Fairland Public School District.  Johnson received her Master of Library and Information Studies from the University of Oklahoma.  She has served as the Public Library Division Chair for OLA, as secretary for the Public Library Director’s Council, and as chair for the Oklahoma Library Technology Network Advisory Council.  She currently serves as Chair for PLDC. Miami Public Library has forged partnerships and taken advantage of grant funds to sponsor Health Literacy programs in the community, an effort that has impacted the library’s mission.

Kathy HaleKathy Hale has been director of the Southern Prairie Library System in southwestern Oklahoma since 1979. During her tenure, successful election campaigns were held to fund library system services, build new facilities, and increase library funding. She has served in a variety of leadership roles for the Oklahoma Library Association, is an Oklahoma Library Legend, and has been active in state and regional efforts in the areas of libraries, information technology and sharing, literacy, and the humanities. Southern Prairie, with its partner the Great Plains Literacy Council, has been a leader in the adult literacy movement in Oklahoma, and has especially been a trailblazer in serving adults who need assistance with learning English and finding the pathway to American citizenship.
