OLA 2015: Graphic Novels: It's a Format not a Genre

A panel discussion on selection, location and programming ideas for graphic novels in schools and public libraries. Attendees will bring away shared knowledge on graphic novel selection, vendors, library displays and programming with patrons and students.

Cathie Sue AndersenCathie Sue Andersen, MLIS (University of Oklahoma), materials selector at the Tulsa City-County Library, selects fiction for children from birth to age 18 including graphic novels for all.  She also was the first Children’s Services Coordinator for TCCL. She is a featured reviewer for the Children’s and Young Adult Book Review Podcast, and has served as a member of each Sequoyah Book Award Reading Team. She has spoken at ALA Annual and multiple Oklahoma Library Association conferences. She lives and raises chickens in Collinsville, Ok.

Alex Gates, MLIS (University of Oklahoma), is the head librarian at Walt Whitman Elementary School in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  In his library, he serves children from Pre K to 6th grade and their teachers.  His interest in comics and graphic novels began at an early age helping his father run his comic book store, Sooner Books and Comics, on Saturdays. His love of libraries also began early. His first real job was being a shelver at the downtown branch of the Tulsa City-County Library.

Melonie JohnsonMelonie Johnson has been a teacher at Allen Public Schools for the past eleven years. She is currently her school's Library Media Specialist for Pre-K through 12th grade. She teaches two sections of 7th grade reading, directs her school's Theater Club, and teaches Art after school to Jr. High and High School students. In her spare time, she loves to read, write, and paint as well as spend time with her husband, Sam and twin daughters, Tiffany and Taylor.
