#librarianproblems: Social Media and Ethics
11:30-12:30 pm
Sponsored by Ethics Committee

Session Description

Join the Ethics Committee and a panel of librarians who maintain an active online presence as we discuss the ethical considerations of posting on social media. Our academic, public, and school librarians will discuss their institutions' policies and how they were developed. We' II present a few scenarios and get feedback from our panelists as well as the audience. These scenarios will address a variety of situations we encounter when posting to social media, such as photographs and permissions, publicizing/posting social media policies, and how the ALA ethics code can be applied to a social media presence.

From the development and implementation of institutional policies to personal preferences, this session will be of interest to anyone who posts on or reads social media for any type of library.

Continue the conversation with the committee members and panelists at a lunch and learn
following our session.

Session Objective

Our objective is to discuss the similarities between academic, public, and school library social media policies and practices in addition to how their policy considerations might be different. We will also highlight ethical issues that librarians might consider when making social media posts.
