Disaster Preparedness Beyond the Drill
11:00 am-12:00 pm
Sponsored by SMART

Session Description

Disasters happen. Crises come up. We have basic plans and we've done the drills, but how else can we prepare? Drawing upon their personal experiences and professional backgrounds, Jessica and Rebekah share the things they've learned from looking backward, living in Moore, and working through crises. The session will include a look at the best practices of crisis communication, real-life experiences in running libraries after major disasters, and tips for preparing for the unexpected.

Session Objective

Provide participants with tools to go beyond the basics of managing crises, from the best practices of communication before, during, and after crises, to boots-on-the-ground recommendations for prepping yourself and your library staff and customers for disaster situations.

Rebekah Lynam

Rebekah Lynam is the branch manager at the Norman West Library. She learned about disasters by being born in Oklahoma, but supplemented that knowledge through research in crisis communication during her graduate work at the University of Oklahoma.

Jessica Conley

Jessica Conley is a librarian, soldier, medic, and professional paranoid. She is currently the circulation manager at the Southwest Oklahoma City Library. Since taking that position four years ago, she has joined the National Guard, lost a home, rebuilt a home, and learned more than she ever wanted to learn about disasters.
