Getting Graphic in Your Catalog!
11:00 am-12:00 pm
Sponsored by TSRT

Session Description

Graphic novels can be tricky to catalog with the numerous creators and confusing series and chronologies. This session will clarify the matter by giving an explanation of how the Pioneer Library System catalogs graphic novels. The session will open with a short introduction to the medium, which will distinguish graphic novels from comic strips. The majority of the session will be devoted to an explanation of how to determine whether a graphic novel should be shelved by author, title, or series. This also involves discussion of what information can be included in the bibliographic record, such as the number of creators, rating information, and standardized subject headings. Finally, the session will conclude with a discussion of useful tools for determining series information, like Comic book database and Wikipedia.

Session Objective

The objective of this session is to provide public library catalogers and staff with tools and ideas for effectively cataloging and organizing graphic novels, as well as to explain a bit about the medium. The goal is for participants to leave the session with a good understanding of graphic novels and the tools to catalog them in order to foster a willingness to include graphic novels in their collections.

Jennifer Lehner

My name is Jennifer Lehner, and I am currently the lead cataloger for the Pioneer Library System. In that position I train and guide three other catalogers, as well as assist the Collections Manager in developing cataloging policy and guidelines for the system. I have held this position for the past eleven years. Prior to that, I worked at the Moore branch as a shelver for one year, followed by a four year stint as a substitute circulation Clerk. I have a bachelor's degree in anthropology and a master's degree in library and information studies, both from the University of Oklahoma. At home, l enjoy baking and am learning to play the ukulele.

Jennifer Marshall

My name is Jennifer Marshall. I am the Collections Manager at the Pioneer Library System. I manage the Technical Services, Delivery and ILL, and Selection departments. I have been working for PLS for almost 15 years. When I am not at work I enjoy reading teen fiction and suspense novels and attending Comic Cons.

Ruth Marie Bell

My name is Ruth Marie Bell and I began working in libraries at the end of my freshman year of college at OU's Media Resource Center. After graduation I moved full-time to OU's cataloging department and spent two years there. For the past five years I have been a cataloger at Pioneer Library System. Outside of work I spend most of my time at home in the country with our animals, sewing, and playing board games.
