We’re Doing It: How Our Public Library is Changing Our Book Collection
Sponsor: Public Libraries Division

Date: Wednesday, April 26
Time: 4:00-5:00 pm
Location: Salon O

Session Description:
This presentation is a description of the goals, the tools and the process of a large weeding project begun in January 2016 and continuing through 2017. At the Belle Isle Library location in the Metropolitan Library System of Oklahoma City, we are reducing the size of our print collection in anticipation of a building move and remodel. The demands from our print collection have changed in recent years; our weeding project has already improved the appearance of the whole building, making the space more inviting and attractive.

Julianna LinkJulianna Link likes to do 3 things at work: help the people, talk about books, and weed the collection. Today she invites you to learn about some practical methods her public library is using to make a too-large collection smaller. Weeding is not an easy task, especially when librarians feel caught in the struggle between readers’ demands, publishing trends, and the goals of their own print collections. What concerns and problems have you encountered when weeding? We’ll talk about getting all staff involved in weeding, using statistics to make helpful weeding lists, and ways of making weeding an organic part of your collection development rather than a once-in-awhile chore. Get inspired to uncover the attractive, timely, display-ready collection you already have on your shelves!
