Guiding Their Future: School Libraries Impacting Learners

Session Description:
What makes an effective school library program. Participants will look at the elements of an effective school library program, advocacy tools, and innovation in the profession. Strategies for implementation will be shared. Attendees will develop action plans for change in their programs.

Kathryn LewisKathryn Roots Lewis is the Director of Media Services and Instructional Technology for Norman Public Schools in Norman, Oklahoma.  Prior to her current position, Kathryn served as a classroom teacher and librarian at all levels.  Kathryn is a member of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Standards and Guidelines Editorial Board and serves on the AASL Board of Directors as the Region 6 representative.  Kathryn is the project director of an IMLS National Leadership Grant for Libraries entitled Learning in Libraries: Guided Inquiry Making and Learning. She was part of the first LILEAD Fellows group, a national professional development program for school library supervisors.  She is on the Oklahoma Technology Association Board and is a past president of the organization. Kathryn was recognized with the 2013 University of Oklahoma School of Library and Information Studies Outstanding Alumni Award, the ISTE Making IT Happen Award, Oklahoma's 2012 Outstanding Technology Leader, and the 2010 Oklahoma Library Association (OLA) Library Legend. Kathryn is a Past Chair of the AASL Supervisors Section and a Past President of Oklahoma Library Association. She is a frequent presenter on library and technology topics at both state and national conferences. Kathryn has authored numerous articles and blogs including co-writing the AASL/Achieve document, Implementing the Common Core State Standards: The Role of the School Librarian Action Brief.  

Stacy SchrankDr. Stacy G. Schrank is the Library Information Specialist and a Teacher Librarian for the Norman Public Schools. Prior to joining NPS, Stacy was the Employee Development Coordinator for the Metropolitan Library System for twelve years. He holds a Ph.D. in Adult & Higher Education and a M.Ed in Educational Leadership. He will complete his MLIS degree at the University of Oklahoma in the Spring of 2017. Stacy has been an active member of the Oklahoma Library Association since 2005 and has held many committee chair and executive board positions including serving as the Oklahoma Chapter Councilor to the ALA Council. He has also served on the OLA GOLD Leadership Committee and helped coordinate the last four OLA GOLD Leadership Institutes. When not working, Stacy enjoys traveling to new and exciting destinations and scouring local thrift stores and flea markets for items to add to his many collections.
