Reaching Patrons With Health Literacy
Sponsor: Tribal Libraries Committee

Date: Wednesday, April 26
Time: 9:50-11:20 am
Location: Salon G

Session Description:
There's a lot more to getting good medical information than what you find using Google. You want accurate and up-to-date sources, and especially ones that are written in language you can understand. (For example, interactions between prescription drugs can be harmful and even fatal, and many consumers don't know whom to ask.) Shari and Ellen will guide participants toward reliable sources sources.

Shari CliftonShari Clifton is Associate Director and Head of Reference and Instructional Services at the Robert M. Bird Health Sciences Library and Professor in the Graduate College at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.  She coordinates outreach for the Library and has presented numerous sessions about health literacy in libraries of all types, from graduate classes at the University of Oklahoma to beginner sessions in public libraries throughout the state.  Shari earned the MLIS at the University of Oklahoma, and a BA in English at Oklahoma City University.  Like Ellen, Shari is a member of Beta Phi Mu.

Ellen Rubenstein is Assistant Professor in the School of Library and Information Studies, University of Oklahoma.  Ellen currently teaches in SLIS, and has published and presented extensively on topics related to health and health literacy.  Her research interests include online communities and communication, information behavior (especially related to health topics), social capital and social networks, and using ethnography to study health information communities.  Ellen is a graduate of the University of Illinois (Ph.D. in LIS).  She holds the MLS from Indiana University, and a BA in English from the State University of New York.  Like Shari, Ellen is a member of Beta Phi Mu.
