REACH Your Stakeholders: Advocating for Your Library

Session Description:
Advocacy is a hot topic in library lingo today as budgetary concerns have the potential to cast shadows on the support and funding of public and school libraries. Reaching your stakeholders with positive messages of your library program’s success is an important step on the path to effective advocacy. This session will explore 5 strategies to help you REACH out to stakeholders for effective program advocacy from both the public and school library perspectives. R- Rally your team. Create and utilize your E- Elevator Speech/tagline. A- Articulate goals and mission. C- Capture successes (with data) to share. H- Honestly reflect and respond.


Kelli CarneyDr. Kelli Carney is the Program Chair of the Library Media & Information Technology Master’s Degree Program at Northeastern State University in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma where she has served as Assistant Professor for the past five years. She has a background of thirteen years in the public school, including serving seven years as a Library Media Specialist/School Librarian and six years as a fourth grade teacher at Locust Grove Upper Elementary School, in Locust Grove, Oklahoma. She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum Studies from Oklahoma State University (2013), Master of Education from Northeastern State University (2002), and Library Media Certification (2005), also of Northeastern State University. Kelli has also earned National Board Certification in Library Media (2007). She has been a member of the Oklahoma Library Association and the American Library Association as well as the Oklahoma School Librarians (OKSL) and the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) divisions for several years. Kelli also serves as the faculty sponsor for the Library Media & Information Technology Student Association (LMITSA) at NSU and enjoys her time spent mentoring and advising future school librarian candidates. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and traveling with her husband.

Kelli McDowellSince 2015, Kelli McDowell has served as the Branch Manager for the South Broken Arrow Library in the Tulsa City-County Library System. She previously worked as a Youth Librarian at the Broken Arrow Library and a Bilingual Youth Associate at the Martin Regional Library, both of the Tulsa City-County Library System. She received her Master’s in Library Media Information Technology through Northeastern State University in Broken Arrow in 2012. Kelli has been a member of OLA and ALA for several years and is an alumna of the OLA Gold Class of 2016. In 2016, Kelli received Tulsa City-County Library’s Nita Mitchell Outstanding Service Award for service of the highest caliber. Through her advocacy efforts in the city of Broken Arrow, Kelli was recently asked to serve as an Ambassador for the Broken Arrow Area Chamber of Commerce. When she is not working, Kelli enjoys traveling, playing board games, and recharging at home with her family and her favorite cat- Monkey.

Joy CarrJoy Carr is the Youth Librarian at the Schusterman-Benson branch of the Tulsa City-County Library. She has a background of three years in the public school, serving as the Library Media Specialist/School Librarian for McKinley Elementary School and Patrick Henry Elementary School in the Tulsa Public School district. She holds a M.S. in Library Media and Information Technology from Northeastern State University (2013). Joy has been a member of the Oklahoma Library Association (OLA), Oklahoma School Librarians (OKSL), Oklahoma Reading Association (ORA), the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), and Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). Outside of the library she coaches a running group and trains for long-distance races.
