OLA Resolutions: 2014

The following Resolutions were approved at the OLA Annual Conference in Tulsa, on April 2, 2014:

Memorial Resolution in Honor of Dr. Edward R. “Ed” Johnson

WHEREAS Dr. Johnson had a long and distinguished career as an academic library administrator at five universities and held the position of Doris Neustadt Professor and Dean of Libraries at Oklahoma State University from 1987 to 2004; and

WHEREAS Dr. Johnson was a stalwart supporter of libraries in higher education, openness in scholarly communication, and interlibrary cooperation in the state and region though his work with the Oklahoma Council of Academic Library Directors and with the Big 12 Plus Libraries Consortium, later the Greater Western Library Alliance; and

WHEREAS Dr. Johnson was an innovator in the provision of library services and programs as well as a mentor and an inspiration to several generations of library professionals; and

WHEREAS Dr. Johnson was a leader in national and state-level library organizations, especially the Oklahoma Library Association (OLA) for which he served as president and as the Oklahoma Chapter councilor to the American Library Association; and

WHEREAS Dr. Johnson worked to help state legislators understand the implications of the Uniform Computer Information Technology Act (UCITA) to libraries and the citizens of Oklahoma, efforts for which he received the OLA Distinguished Service Award in 2004; and

WHEREAS Dr. Johnson was recognized by OLA as one of the state’s 100 Library Legends during the association’s centennial year; therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the Oklahoma Library Association honors the memory of Dr. Edward R. “Ed” Johnson and commends him for his leadership, his many professional contributions, his advocacy on behalf of libraries, and his commitment to the association; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the Oklahoma Library Association offers its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues, and joins them in celebrating his life.

Resolution to Honor Charles Brooks

WHEREAS, Charles Brooks has been a member of the Oklahoma Library Association since 1988; and

WHEREAS, Charles has served in many leadership capacities including OLA president, Local Arrangements co-chair, Program Committee chair, Membership Committee chair, University and College Division chair, and served on the OLA Executive Board; and

WHEREAS, Charles for many years willingly took conference photos and has shared his love of being a librarian with Information Matrix Campers; and

WHEREAS, Charles has been OLA Webmaster since 2012 and previously served as Webmaster from 2003-2007; and

WHEREAS, Charles has been instrumental in the Association’s transition to providing an exceptional web presence and allowing members to pay dues and register for workshops and conferences online; and

WHEREAS, Charles “Rings True” in his dedication to serving OLA in any capacity he is asked (and often without being asked) and always with a smile and near perfection; therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the members of the Oklahoma Library Association recognize Charles Brooks for his outstanding service to the Association and its members and for being a strong advocate for Oklahoma libraries.

Resolution to Honor Donna Morris on the Occasion of her Retirement

WHEREAS Donna Morris has announced her plans to retire from the Metropolitan Library System later in 2014; and

WHEREAS Donna has given Metropolitan and the citizens of Oklahoma County forty-five years of dedicated library service; and

WHEREAS Donna has been a leader in OLA having served as president, treasurer, Oklahoma Chapter councilor, and many other positions, and was honored as one of the state’s Library Legends in OLA’s centennial year; and

WHEREAS Donna has been an inspiration and a mentor to many librarians and library leaders across the state and nation; therefore be it

RESOLVED that the Oklahoma Library Association would like to thank Donna for her exemplary leadership and advocacy on behalf of Oklahoma libraries and OLA, and wish her well as she makes her future plans.

Resolution to Honor Pat Williams and Gary Phillips on the Occasion of their Retirement

WHEREAS Pat Williams and Gary Phillips are both retiring after many years of library service to the Oklahoma Department of Libraries; and

WHEREAS Pat was a certification specialist/public library consultant at ODL, helping public librarians with their professional development and improving the quality of library service for the citizens of Oklahoma; and

WHEREAS Pat has served OLA as editor of the Oklahoma Librarian and as a dedicated member of the Continuing Education Committee, the Public Library Division, and other groups; and

WHEREAS Gary has served at the Oklahoma Department of Libraries in different capacities, most recently working with Oklahoma government documents; and

WHEREAS Gary saw the Oklahoma Publications Clearinghouse through to the digital age, making state documents more readily available to all Oklahomans; and

WHEREAS Gary has chaired and supported the work of the OLA Government Documents Roundtable for many years; therefore be it

RESOLVED that the Oklahoma Library Association would like to thank both Pat and Gary for their many contributions to Oklahoma libraries and their support OLA, and we wish them well as they enter these new chapters in their lives.

Resolution to Commend President Lynda Reynolds for the OLA Handbook Revision

WHEREAS our 2013/2014 President Lynda Reynolds decided herself to the initiative of a major revision of the OLA Handbook, including the Constitution and Bylaws; and

WHEREAS the Oklahoma Library Association’s practices and functions have changed in numerous ways during the past ten years; and

WHEREAS the OLA Handbook is an old document that despite partial revisions still retained many outdated statements and descriptions of procedures as well as of divisions, roundtables, and committees; therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the Oklahoma Library Association expresses its gratitude to President Reynolds for taking on this task in order to revise the OLA Handbook and make it more accurate and of better use to the members.
