OLA Resolutions: 2018

The following Resolutions were approved at the OLA Annual Conference in Tulsa, on April 25, 2018:

WHEREAS Dr. David Oberhelman had a long and distinguished career as an academic reference librarian at Oklahoma State University and held the position of W.P. Wood Professor of Library Service at Oklahoma State University; and

WHEREAS Dr. Oberhelman ably served his profession in many leadership roles in such national and regional organizations as the American Library Association, the Mountain Plains Library Association, the Association of College and Research Libraries, the Modern Language Association, the Mythopoeic Society, and the Southwest Popular/American Culture Association; and

WHEREAS during his 19 years of service at Oklahoma State University Dr. Oberhelman forged strong relationships within his academic liaison departments in the humanities, resulting in numerous successful programs such as the Noon Concert Series and the Great War Lecture Series; and

WHEREAS Dr. Oberhelman was the author of over 100 scholarly publications, including authoring, co-authoring and contributing to seven books, and served for four years as the Secretary of the Mythopoeic Press; and

WHEREAS Dr. Oberhelman participated in the Oklahoma Library Association’s Leadership Institute representing OSU; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Oberhelman participated in the OLA Information Matrix Camp for three years; and

WHEREAS Dr. Oberhelman chaired the OLA University and College Division several times, most recently during 2016/2017; and

WHEREAS Dr. Oberhelman chaired the OLA Resolutions Committee for many years, compiling numerous resolutions honoring individual OLA members and organizations which were approved by the membership; and

WHEREAS Dr. Oberhelman is recognized this year as an Oklahoma Library Legend; therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the Oklahoma Library Association honors the memory of Dr. David Oberhelman and commends him for his leadership, his many professional contributions, and his commitment to the association; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the Oklahoma Library Association offers its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues, and joins them in celebrating his life.

WHEREAS, federal library funding helps Oklahoma libraries provide resources for students, assistance to small business, internet access, support for job seekers, technology training, summer reading programs, and transparent access to the information necessary to support a free and open democracy; and

WHEREAS, school, public, academic, and tribal libraries in all Oklahoma communities are better able to serve their patrons with in-depth, accurate resources made possible by federal funding; and

WHEREAS, the LSTA Native American Grants Program of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has provided basic and enhancement grants to Oklahoma tribal libraries, allowing them to better serve the informational and educational needs of Indian Country; and

WHEREAS, federal funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has been critical in the development of these services; and

WHEREAS, the Oklahoma Library Association wishes to recognize that last year Congressman Cole supported continuing funding for IMLS and libraries; and

WHEREAS, Congressman Cole in his role as Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee that funds IMLS has demonstrated leadership by continuing and expanding funding for all libraries and for Native American library services; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the membership of the Oklahoma Library Association, in profound appreciation of his efforts, hereby expresses our heartfelt thanks for his work on behalf of the patrons of libraries in Oklahoma.

WHEREAS in 1978, a group of Friends organized Friends of Libraries in Oklahoma (FOLIO) after a proclamation from the Governor’s Conference on Libraries called for the creation of a state wide Friends group;

WHEREAS FOLIO membership includes Friends and libraries from around the state as well as people in the general public who love libraries;

WHEREAS the mission of FOLIO is to promote, support and strengthen libraries through Friends of Libraries and other support groups, and FOLIO supports this mission in multiple ways;

WHEREAS FOLIO provides seed grants for groups wishing to start or revitalize a Friends group;

WHEREAS FOLIO provides scholarships for library support staff education;

WHEREAS FOLIO offers awards for Best Friends and Friends of Libraries Week;

WHEREAS FOLIO connects all local Friends with the state organization through the Outreach Ambassador Program;

WHEREAS FOLIO supports libraries through programs such as the Oklahoma Department of Libraries’ Reading Roundup author tours and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation’s Smart Investing program;

WHEREAS FOLIO works with local communities to coordinate national Literary Landmark dedications in Oklahoma for special locations in honor of deceased Oklahoma literary figures, authors or their works;

WHEREAS FOLIO provides timely information concerning matters of interest or concern to library friends through a quarterly newsletter, website, and Facebook page; and

WHEREAS FOLIO continues to have an impact across all of Oklahoma by electing persons from all parts of the state to serve on the FOLIO Board of Directors and Advisory Board; therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the Oklahoma Library Association proclaims the year 2018, as Friends of Libraries in Oklahoma 40th Anniversary Celebration, and thanks FOLIO for all it does to make our local Friends of the Libraries groups, libraries and communities better!

WHEREAS, Lynda Reynolds has spent countless hours ensuring the success of the Oklahoma Library Association; and

WHEREAS, Lynda has served on almost every committee and led the organization; and

WHEREAS, Lynda has led the Stillwater Public Library since 2001; and

WHEREAS, Lynda has successfully lobbied her city and the Oklahoma Legislature for needed library funding; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the Oklahoma Library Association would like to thank Lynda for her exemplary leadership and advocacy on behalf of the Oklahoma Library Association, and wish her well in her future endeavors in North Carolina.
