OLA Resolutions: 2019

The following Resolutions were approved at the OLA Annual Conference in Norman, on March 15, 2019:

Resolution to Honor Helen Clements on the Occasion of her Retirement

WHEREAS Helen Clements retired from the Oklahoma State University Library in 2018 after a long and distinguished career as Reference Librarian in the Research and Learning Services Division; and

WHEREAS Helen received in 2017 the Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor that can be bestowed on an OLA member; and

WHEREAS Helen has served in several leadership roles in the Oklahoma Library Association, including the Library Education Division, the University and College Division, and the Tribal Libraries Committee; and

WHEREAS Helen has been the mainstay of the Tribal Libraries Committee for many years, serving multiple terms as a tireless Co-Chair and advocate for tribal libraries across the state; and

WHEREAS Helen has served as Chair and active member of the University and College Division for several years, providing guidance for new officers; and

WHEREAS Helen has been an active member of Oklahoma ACRL, serving as Board President in 2004-2006; and

WHEREAS Helen has also served on the national level, including several sections of the American Library Association’s Association of College and Research Libraries; and

WHEREAS Helen has contributed to the professional and scholarly study of librarianship, authoring numerous articles and book chapters, as well as making presentations at professional conferences; and

WHEREAS Helen has been a tireless advocate for public libraries, as well as academic libraries, having served for six years as a member of the Stillwater Public Library Board; and

WHEREAS Helen has been an inspiration and a mentor to many librarians and library leaders across the state; therefore be it

RESOLVED that the Oklahoma Library Association would like to thank Helen for her excellent leadership and wish her well in her retirement.

 

Resolution of Appreciation for
Oklahoma Senator J.J. Dossett and Representative Jadine Nollan

WHEREAS, certified school librarians are instructional leaders who support the digital, participatory, inquiry, information, and technological learning of all members of the school communities they serve; and

WHEREAS, school library aides provide support for the school librarian, classroom teachers, learners, and other members of the school community; and

WHEREAS, purchased services related to school library expenditures are necessary and enable school librarians to provide essential services for all members of the school community; and

WHEREAS, Oklahoma Senator J.J. Dossett authored Oklahoma 2019 Senate Bill 44 that defines instructional expenditures as including salaries, benefits, and funding for school librarians, library aides, and related services; and

WHEREAS, Senate Bill 44 passed the Senate Education Committee and the full Oklahoma Senate; and

WHEREAS, Oklahoma Representative Jadine Nollan agreed to be the House author of Senate Bill 44, and will guide the bill through the Oklahoma House of Representatives; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the membership of the Oklahoma Library Association, which includes the Oklahoma School Librarians division, hereby expresses our heartfelt gratitude for the efforts of Senator Dossett and Representative Nollan.

 

Resolution for Lynn McIntosh

WHEREAS: Lynn McIntosh has served 23 years as the Director of the Southern Oklahoma Library System;

WHEREAS: she has worked tirelessly to improve library services in southern Oklahoma by remodeling 2 libraries, construction, 4 new libraries: improved library services to the patrons in the Southern Oklahoma Library System;

WHEREAS: she has served as president of the Oklahoma Library Association, served on numerous OLA committees, and has been a MC, or leader in creation of the Oklahoma Library Association Endowment which has reached over $300,000;

WHEREAS: she has received the Oklahoma Library Distinguished Service Award, was recognized as a Library Legend by the Oklahoma Library Association, has received the University of Oklahoma Outstanding Alumni Award;

WHEREAS: she has been a major leader in the center for the Book and the Oklahoma Humanities Council;

WHEREAS: she will always been remembered for her work to make the CARS Event a reality and huge success;Therefore be it

RESOLVED that: The Oklahoma Library Association recognize Lynn McIntosh for her service to Oklahoma Libraries and the Oklahoma Library Association upon her well-deserved retirement.

 

Resolution for Susan McVey

WHEREAS: Susan McVey served as the Director of the Dulaney-Browne Library at Oklahoma City University and the Director of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries for 32 years;

WHEREAS: she secured a $4 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which provided public access to computers in every Oklahoma public library with access to the Internet;

WHEREAS: she negotiated statewide access to 2000 + full text magazines and journals for academic, public, school, and special libraries in Oklahoma;

WHEREAS: she worked to include public libraries in the Oklahoma Universal Service Fund so the Oklahomans in every county would have access to high speed broadband at no cost to libraries;

WHEREAS: she has served as president of Oklahoma Library Association and President of the Chief Officer of the State Library Agencies;

WHEREAS: she has received the distinction of the Library Legend of the Oklahoma Library Association; the Oklahoma Library Association Distinguished Service Award; and inclusion in the Friends of the Library in Oklahoma Hall of Fame;

WHEREAS: her accomplishments in the Oklahoma library world and her services to the citizens of the state of Oklahoma have been exceptional; be it

RESOLVED that: the Oklahoma Library Association should recognize her as a “special librarian” in Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Library Association on her retirement as well as thanking her for all that she has done.
