Sequoyah Great Books Grant

Applications are due by 5pm on Tuesday, December 1st. Winners will be notified by December 14th.

Each year, the Sequoyah Reading Team members receive thousands of dollars of newly published books that have been targeted primarily towards children and young adults and eligible for the Sequoyah Masterlists. Publishers submit copies for selection committees to review and nominate. While team members get to keep these books, some members have donated their copies of new titles to put together a trial for a book giveaway grant. The purpose of this grant is to give these titles to at least two libraries, in need, with at least $2000 worth of new books each. The books available during this trial grant cycle are intended for young adults ages 12-18 and are almost all hardback titles.

Applicants must demonstrate the following:

  • Why new young adult books are needed in their library
  • How acquiring the collection will help them better serve the youth of their community.

Criteria

Each application will be judged on the basis of:

  • The degree of need in the community (40 points)
  • The degree of need of the school, public, special, or tribal library, where the library is located. (40 points)
  • The degree of clarity and effectiveness of the statement of need. (20 points)

A total of 100 points is possible. Each entry will be rated by this point system and the winning applications will be the ones with the highest total number of points. The Sequoyah Administration Committee will judge the applicants.

Guidelines

  • Applicants must be personal or organizational members of OLA.
  • Applicants must agree, if awarded the grant, to schedule a time to physically visit the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. to obtain the winning grant books, with the understanding that this collection they are choosing new material from is targeted primarily for young adults, ages 12-18. Applicants will get to select up to $2000 worth of titles from what is available.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Winners will also agree to provide OLA with a follow up within a year after receiving the grant, if awarded (the follow up can be a formal report, circulation statistics, photos, etc. to show the impact of the grant on the library.)

Please email sequoyah@oklibs.org if you have any questions.
