The Oklahoma Library Association Sequoyah Book Awards are the third oldest state book award in the country the first being April, 1959.

Commitments of the Sequoyah Reading Team:

  • Be an Oklahoma school or public librarian actively involved in the selection and/or purchase of materials appropriate to the age/grade requirements of the respective committees.
  • Required yearly membership with the Oklahoma Library Association.
  • A three-year commitment for all Reading Team members.
  • Read and evaluate as many books as possible from the consideration list. Consideration lists typically run up to 300 titles each year. Reading Team members are expected to read an average of 2-3 books each week from the Consideration List.
  • Required attendance at regularly scheduled (usually monthly) reading team meetings, a minimum of 12 days.
  • Required attendance at the spring OLA Annual Conference each year, a minimum of 1 day.
  • Required attendance at OTA/Encyclo-Media each year, a minimum of 1 day. Total attendance for all meetings and conferences is a minimum of 14 days per year.
  • Create a Masterlist annually.
  • Create a consideration list annually.
  • Create Sequoyah booktalks and other promotional materials and promote list at OLA and OTA/Encyclopedia conferences.
